Challenge
The freight railway operator needed to optimise its asset maintenance programme to reduce costs while maintaining safety and performance standards. The existing maintenance regime was largely time-based, and there was an opportunity to move to a more risk-informed, condition-based approach that would extend asset life and reduce unnecessary interventions.
Solution
Floreer developed bespoke asset performance models that linked asset condition data to degradation profiles and maintenance intervention costs. Probabilistic analysis was used to identify the optimal maintenance intervals and strategies for each asset type. The models also enabled the operator to evaluate the cost and performance implications of different maintenance scenarios.
Outcome
The optimised maintenance programme delivered significant cost savings compared to the previous time-based regime, without compromising safety or performance. The models provided the operator with a decision-support tool that could be updated as new asset condition data became available, enabling continuous improvement of maintenance strategies.
